Self-Concept

Self-Concept

This video discusses the topic of self-concept.  A person’s self-concept is the belief that you have about yourself.  Specifically, what you value, who you are as a person and what you stand for.  The reason Self-concept is so important is that if we have a good relationship with ourselves, we can then have a better relationship with others.  It all starts with our own inner dialogue.   For example, if you have a negative Self-concept, you might think you are a failure and that you will fail at everything. You then to begin acting out that inner dialogue and looking for others to corroborate that thought.

Here are some more examples of a negative self-concept.

You walk into a room, and the first thing people notice about you is your eyes are diverted to the ground and your shoulders are slumped over.  Your body language is saying, “I don’t feel like I should be acknowledged.

Passive Communication

Passive communicators don’t value their own opinion and sometimes struggle making decisions.

Do you ever wonder why people do not rely on you to make decisions?

For example.

What do you want for dinner?  “Oh, I don’t care”

Where do you want to go?  “Doesn’t matter to me”

This could be because you do not value your own opinion.  You may feel that people might be devaluing you and/or not giving you respect.  However, this is all based on your relationship with yourself, because if you have proven to them that you value your own opinion, you would be assertively communicating your wants and needs, they would have no choice but to treat you in that manner.

Your inner dialogue is important; make sure that you are kind and valuing yourself.  At Restorative Family Services, we specialize in teaching individuals to have a positive relationship with themselves.  We will teach you various coping techniques that will assist you on your journey towards having a healthier Self-concept.  Together, we will help you reach your full potential.
